ChatGPT study mode vs Claude learning mode vs Gemini guided learning — Ace blog

Short answer: ChatGPT's study mode, Claude's learning mode and Gemini's guided learning all do the same core thing: instead of handing you the answer, they ask you questions, give hints and check your understanding. ChatGPT's is the most quiz-like, Claude's leans on Socratic questioning and also has a learning style for coding, and Gemini's adds images, diagrams, videos and quizzes. None of them guarantees correct answers, so give them your own course material and check what they say against it.

Why do AI chatbots have study modes now?

Because getting answers isn't the same as learning. A field experiment by Bastani and colleagues (2025) with high school maths students found that those given an unrestricted GPT-4 tutor did better while practising with it but worse than students without AI once the tool was taken away; a version built to give hints instead of answers largely avoided that harm. The study modes are the AI companies' answer to the same problem: make the student do the thinking.

All three arrived within a few months of each other in 2025. Features change often, so treat the details below as a snapshot and check what your version offers. For the wider picture, see our earlier ChatGPT vs Gemini vs Claude for studying.

What does ChatGPT study mode do?

OpenAI launched study mode on 29 July 2025 for Free, Plus, Pro and Team users. Turn it on and ChatGPT guides you step by step with Socratic questions, combines hints with prompts to reflect, breaks explanations into smaller chunks and checks your knowledge with quizzes and open-ended questions. It adapts to your level and can be switched off mid-conversation when you just want a quick fact.

OpenAI was open that study mode runs on custom instructions rather than being built into the model, which it said can cause some inconsistent behaviour and mistakes across conversations.

Good for: working through problem sets, being quizzed on a topic, and students who already use ChatGPT for everything else.

What does Claude learning mode do?

Anthropic introduced learning mode in April 2025 as part of Claude for Education, then made it available to all Claude users in August 2025. In the Claude app you pick "Learning" from the style menu; Claude then responds with questions that push you to reason through the problem yourself, such as how you'd approach it or what evidence supports a conclusion, and you can turn it off at any time.

For computing students, Claude Code got two matching styles: Explanatory, which talks through its reasoning, and Learning, which pauses and leaves small parts of the code for you to write.

Good for: essay subjects, arguing through a concept, and learning to code rather than just getting code.

What does Gemini guided learning do?

Google launched guided learning in Gemini on 6 August 2025. It's a toggle in the prompt box that turns Gemini into what Google calls a thinking partner: it breaks problems into steps, adapts explanations to you, and brings in images, diagrams, videos and interactive quizzes. You can also ask it to make flashcards and study guides from your quiz results or class materials.

Good for: visual topics such as biology, geography and physics, and students already using Google's apps for school.

Which AI study mode is best for students?

  • Maths and problem sets: ChatGPT study mode or Gemini guided learning, which both walk through problems one step at a time.
  • Essays and humanities: Claude learning mode, which pushes you to build and defend the argument yourself.
  • Visual subjects: Gemini guided learning, for diagrams and videos alongside the explanation.
  • Programming: Claude Code's Learning style, so you write the important parts.
  • Everything else: the one you already have and actually open. The habit matters more than the brand.

Whichever you use, start each session by asking it to quiz you before it explains anything. Trying to answer first, even wrongly, helps you learn the answer when it comes (Kornell and colleagues, 2009). See how top students use ChatGPT for exams.

What don't AI study modes do?

  • They don't know your course. Unless you upload your slides, they teach the general version of a topic, which may not match how your lecturer teaches it or what the exam marks.
  • They can still be wrong. A Socratic question with a wrong answer key is still wrong. Check against your notes, especially for numbers, names and definitions. See can you trust AI study answers.
  • They don't keep a question bank. Each chat starts fresh, so coming back to the same questions over days, which is what makes revision stick, is up to you.

That's the gap Ace fills. It turns your own lecture slides, PDFs or YouTube lectures into a set of practice questions written only from that material, shows the sentence from your file behind every answer, and keeps the set so you can come back to it, solo or in a duel with a friend.

Frequently asked questions

Is Claude, ChatGPT or Gemini best for studying?

All three have a dedicated study mode that asks questions instead of giving answers. ChatGPT's suits problem sets and quizzes, Claude's suits reasoning and essays, and Gemini's suits visual topics. Use the one you'll actually open, and check its answers against your notes.

Are the study modes free?

ChatGPT study mode launched for free users as well as paid plans, and Claude's learning mode was opened to all users. Gemini guided learning is available in the Gemini app. Plans and limits change, so check each app.

Can AI study modes make mistakes?

Yes. OpenAI itself said study mode can behave inconsistently and make mistakes. Give the AI your own material and verify important answers.
