To make flashcards from a YouTube video: copy the video's link, open Ace, tap New study set, choose Link and paste it. Ace reads the video's captions and writes four-option questions based on what was said. The video must have captions (auto-generated captions are fine); English works best today.
Step by step
- Copy the link. In the YouTube app, tap Share → Copy link.
- Paste it into Ace. Start a new study set, tap Link, and paste.
- Ace reads the transcript. Captions arrive in short fragments with no punctuation; Ace stitches them into readable passages and keeps the timestamps.
- Get your questions. Ace writes questions from the lecture's key ideas and checks each one against the transcript.
- Study or duel. Go through them solo, or tap Invite and quiz a friend who watched the same lecture.
Which videos work best?
- University lectures and recorded classes — long, structured, and full of testable ideas.
- Explainer channels for science, history, economics and medicine.
- Exam-prep walkthroughs where a teacher talks through a topic.
Videos that are mostly visual — silent demonstrations, worked maths on a whiteboard with little narration, music — don't give Ace much to work with, because it learns from what is said.
Requirements
| Captions | Required. YouTube's auto-generated captions are fine. |
|---|---|
| Language | English works best today. |
| Visibility | Public or unlisted videos. Private videos can't be read. |
| Length | Short explainers to full-length lectures. |
Pair the video with the reading
A study set can hold more than one source. Add the lecture video and the slides or textbook chapter it covers, and Ace has both the explanation and the detail to write from — which makes for better wrong answers and fewer gaps.
Why quiz yourself instead of rewatching?
Rewatching feels productive because everything seems familiar. But recognising something isn't the same as being able to recall it under exam conditions. Testing yourself — trying to retrieve the answer before you see it — is one of the most reliable ways to make learning stick. Read the research summary.
Common questions
Can Ace make flashcards from a video without captions?
Not at the moment. Ace builds questions from the transcript, so the video needs captions — auto-generated ones work.
Does it work with videos in other languages?
English captions work best today. Support for more languages is planned.
Can I use a YouTube playlist?
Add videos one link at a time. A single study set can include several videos and files.
